A resolution
memorializing the United States government to honor veterans by funding construction
costs for proposed veterans homes in Bemidji, Montevideo, and Preston.
WHEREAS, the State of Minnesota honors all veterans who have bravely served in the United
States armed forces; and
WHEREAS, the State of Minnesota wishes to show gratitude to those valorous individuals
by increasing access to high-quality medical care for our veterans and their spouses through the
construction of veterans homes in the communities of Bemidji, Montevideo, and Preston; and
WHEREAS, the communities of Bemidji, Montevideo, and Preston have shown strong and
continual support for the construction of a veterans home in their communities; and
WHEREAS, funding from the State of Minnesota to predesign, design, construct, furnish,
and equip veterans homes in those communities has been enacted into state law; and
WHEREAS, the law that provides this funding also commits the State of Minnesota to
"provide the necessary operating costs for the veterans homes in excess of any revenue and federal
funding for the homes that may be required to continue the operation of the homes and care for
Minnesota veterans;" and
WHEREAS, the United States government has historically provided a share of the funding
to construct veterans homes; and
WHEREAS, financial support from the United States government is crucial to ensure that
these veterans homes are completed; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Legislature of the State of Minnesota that it urges the Congress
of the United States and the United States Department of Veterans Affairs to allocate all necessary
funding to provide the United States government's share of the construction costs for the proposed
veterans homes in Bemidji, Montevideo, and Preston, Minnesota.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of State of the State of Minnesota is directed
to prepare copies of this memorial and transmit them to the President of the United States, the
United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs, the President and the Secretary of the United States
Senate, the Majority Leader and the Minority Leader of the United States Senate, the Speaker and
the Clerk of the United States House of Representatives, the Majority Leader and the Minority
Leader of the United States House of Representatives, the members of the United States Senate
Committee on Veterans' Affairs, the members of the United States House of Representatives
Committee on Veterans' Affairs, and Minnesota's Senators and Representatives in Congress.
