1.1 A bill for an act 1.2 relating to child care licensing; establishing a new 1.3 classification of child care worker for child care 1.4 centers; amending Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 1.5 245A.14, by adding a subdivision. 1.6 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 1.7 Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 245A.14, is 1.8 amended by adding a subdivision to read: 1.9 Subd. 8. [CHILD CARE ASSISTANT.] A classification of 1.10 worker called a child care assistant is established for purposes 1.11 of licensing and employment at child care centers. A child care 1.12 assistant must: (1) be 18 years of age or older; and (2) have 1.13 4,160 hours of child care related experience. A child care 1.14 assistant may: (1) carry out child care program activities 1.15 under the direction of a teacher; (2) open and close a 1.16 classroom, but not a center; and (3) be alone with children 1.17 onsite for up to 25 percent of child care assistant's shift when 1.18 a teacher is onsite. The commissioner may incorporate this 1.19 classification of child care worker in applicable rules when the 1.20 rules are updated or modified. 1.21 Sec. 2. [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 1.22 Section 1 is effective July 1, 2000.
