A bill for an act
relating to Carver County; combining the offices of county recorder, county
auditor, and county treasurer; providing for a referendum to determine if an
office is appointive in Carver County.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1. new text begin COMBINATION OF OFFICES.

new text begin Notwithstanding any other law to the contrary, effective on January 1, 2007, the
offices of the county recorder, county auditor, and county treasurer in Carver County shall
be combined to become the office of the county auditor-treasurer-recorder.

Sec. 2. new text begin CARVER COUNTY OFFICER REFERENDUM.

new text begin At the 2006 general election, a ballot question shall be submitted to the voters in
Carver County to determine if the county auditor-treasurer-recorder is an appointive or
elective position. If the voters determine that the office is appointive, the appointment
shall be made by the county board and shall take effect on January 1, 2010.

Sec. 3. new text begin EFFECTIVE DATE; LOCAL APPROVAL.

new text begin Sections 1 and 2 are effective the day after the governing body of Carver County and
its chief clerical officer timely complete their compliance with Minnesota Statutes, section
645.021, subdivisions 2 and 3.
