  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; clarifying the date of school 
  1.3             board organizational meetings; amending Minnesota 
  1.4             Statutes 2002, section 123B.14, subdivision 1. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2002, section 123B.14, 
  1.7   subdivision 1, is amended to read: 
  1.8      Subdivision 1.  [OFFICER SELECTION.] Within ten days after 
  1.9   the election of the first board in independent districts and 
  1.10  annually thereafter on July 1, On the first Monday of January of 
  1.11  each year, or as soon thereafter as practicable, the board must 
  1.12  meet and organize by selecting a chair, clerk, and a treasurer, 
  1.13  who shall hold their offices for one year and until their 
  1.14  successors are selected and qualify. The persons who perform the 
  1.15  duties of the clerk and treasurer need not be members of the 
  1.16  board and the board by resolution may combine the duties of the 
  1.17  offices of clerk and treasurer in a single person in the office 
  1.18  of business affairs.  They may appoint a superintendent who 
  1.19  shall be ex officio a member of the board, but not entitled to 
  1.20  vote therein.  In districts in which board members are elected 
  1.21  at the general election in November, the annual meeting of the 
  1.22  board must be held on the first Monday of January or as soon 
  1.23  thereafter as practicable.
